Breakfast Above the Clouds: Hinterhornalm
There’s something special about starting your day in the mountains—and few places near Innsbruck offer a more breathtaking setting than Hinterhornalm. Nestled in the Karwendel mountains, just a short distance from the city, this rustic alpine hut combines traditional Tyrolean charm with sweeping views over the Inn Valley.

We decided to reach Hinterhornalm in the morning, just in time for breakfast. I started the day from the St. Martin parking area, hopping on my bike for the 6-kilometer climb to the Alm. The road is paved and the incline quite manageable, even for those without an electric bike. But if you do have an e-bike, you’ll be happy to know that charging stations are available at the top.
For those driving, the road is accessible by car as well, but you’ll need to purchase a toll permit from an automatic dispenser at the entrance to the mountain road.
The Ascent and the Views

One thing to keep in mind—part of the route is exposed, with very little tree cover. On sunny summer days, bring a hat and sunscreen, as the sun can be intense. That said, the effort is more than worth it. As you climb, the views open up dramatically. You’ll get sweeping vistas of Innsbruck, the Inn River, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Make sure your camera or phone is ready—you’ll want to capture the panorama.
A Mountain Breakfast to Remember
Arriving at Hinterhornalm, you’re welcomed by a spacious wooden terrace filled with long benches and tables. The staff are friendly, and the warm, rustic atmosphere makes you feel immediately at home. We timed our visit for breakfast, and we were not disappointed.
I highly recommend the regional breakfast board—a generous spread of local cheeses, cured meats, fresh eggs, jams, croissants, seasonal fruit, and more. It’s perfect whether you’re in the mood for a hearty brunch or just want to nibble and sip coffee while soaking in the landscape.
Just below the terrace, horses graze peacefully, making the experience feel even more in harmony with nature. For families, there are dedicated play areas for kids, making it a great destination for all ages. And in case of bad weather? The interior dining rooms of the Alm are just as lovely—spacious, cozy, and full of alpine character.
After Breakfast: Hikes and Hidden Gems
Hinterhornalm is not just a destination—it’s also the starting point for beautiful hikes. After breakfast, we followed the path towards Waldner Alm, an enchanting meadow with incredible views and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to lie back in the grass, watch the grazing animals, read a book, or simply do nothing at all.
If you didn’t eat at Hinterhornalm, Waldner Alm is a great alternative—simpler, even more rustic, and with a panoramic view over alpine pastures, the charming Walderalm Chapel, and a handful of traditional farm buildings.
We’ve written a dedicated post on Waldner Alm with more details, so check that out if you’re planning to go further.
From there, you can either retrace your steps back to Hinterhornalm or continue down towards Ganalm. The latter option gives you a spectacular view over the Vomperbach Valley, with its steep slopes and untouched wilderness—a place that inspires meditation and silence.
