I started my hike to Lichtsee from the Parkplatz Obernbergersee, a popular parking spot that serves as a gateway for several hiking tours in the area. Among the many trails, I chose a two-hour trek that would take me to one of Tyrol’s hidden gems: Lichtsee, sitting at an altitude of 2,100 meters, close to the border between Austria and Italy.
As soon as we start walking, it’s clear that this is no ordinary hike. The landscape around us is pure, untouched, and almost surreal in its calmness. Few tourists venture here, and as we ascend towards the Brenner Pass, it feels like we’re leaving behind the chaos of the modern world, stepping into a serene paradise. This region is a haven for quiet contemplation, with breathtaking views inviting introspection at every turn.
The trail itself is well-marked, and we follow the signs for Lichtsee. The hike is moderate—though there are some steep sections, it’s accessible to most people who enjoy casual trekking. As we move higher, the valley begins to open up, revealing one stunning view after another. We start by passing through lush forests, which gradually give way to rolling green meadows and rugged mountain rock as we climb in altitude.
Then, just when you think the landscape couldn’t get more beautiful, the trail leads to a small mountain hut. And beyond that, as if by magic, the Lichtsee suddenly appears, shimmering in the sunlight. It’s an alpine lake with crystal-clear, luminous water, and the sight is enough to take your breath away. After descending a few meters, we reach the shore of the lake, where you can kick off your shoes, refresh your feet in the cool water, and simply enjoy the peace. The water, though cold, is inviting, and the adventurous among us might even consider a quick dip. Small fish dart around in the shallow waters, and the smooth rocks underfoot provide a natural foot massage as you wade along the shoreline.
This spot is perfect for laying back and watching the clouds roll by, listening to the gentle sounds of the water. Lichtsee is more than just a beautiful place; it’s a meditative experience that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.
Once you’ve enjoyed the lake, you have two options. You can return the way you came, retracing your steps back to the parking lot. Or, if you’re up for more adventure, you can follow trail 125 to Gries am Brenner for a longer hike through the mountains.
